Maybe you’re buying a home that needs a remodel, and the garage floors looks bad. Maybe you didn’t even realize that your concrete garage floor could crack at all, and that if those cracks are not tended to immediately, they can make garage floor paint or other coatings almost impossible to apply. You might have had problems with flooding, the ground shifting, or any of a ton of other factors that can cause damage to your concrete in ways that really cannot be controlled. Regardless, sometimes you do need a garage floor covering.

Why Shouldn’t I Just Repair The Concrete?

Even though there are ways you can repair damaged concrete and paint over the cracks to make it not so noticeable, these methods always run the risk of returning cracks. In most cases, whatever caused the damage to the concrete in the beginning has a good chance of causing the problem again. As a result, the best objective is to forget about garage floor paint and purchase a garage floor covering in place of the repairs. Garage floor coverings are construed as garage floor tiles or mats. Most anything that does not coat the surface of your original concrete and adds another layer. You can use both of these garage floor coverings, but the first may not work in all situations.

Garage Floor Tiles Only Work Sometimes

Tiles can be used on concrete that has very small cracks, and they don’t necessarily need to be filled beforehand. This is because tiles will grip whatever it is they are attached to, so it doesn’t really matter to them if there is a tiny space where there is nothing to grip. In fact, since garage floor tiles are not a coating and remain physically separate, they may actually be helpful in preventing smaller cracks from expanding. As with any other garage floor covering, the idea is that, once the tiles are in place, any blemishes or damage will be hidden from view. Tiles should never be used where the concrete garage floor is stained. As time goes by, that stain will sweat, which means the sticky material on the bottom of the tiles will be inundated with whatever chemical it was that stained your concrete. This will cause the tiles to lose their grip, and you’ll be in no better shape than you were before.

Garage Floor Mats Always Work

In some cases when the garage flooring is just really defiled, your only choice is to use garage floor mats. Fortunately, a mat is just as adept for resistance against chemicals as most anything, and it can be made to look great while doing it’s job. Unluckily though, it is like placing a “Band-Aid” onto your problem, and may even return to reek havoc. If your concrete is seriously breaking up in spots, it might dish out some jagged edges that will tear any garage floor covering, particularly when the covering has been driven upon. It is possible that the terrible state of the concrete can go unnoticed as it degrades even further, if covered up by a garage floor mat. However, if your garage floor mat does get damaged, it can be replaced with the smallest of problems. Of course, that is only if you are able to afford to buy another mat.

You May Not Have To Decide Your Garage Floor Covering

You could very easily use either solution on your damaged concrete if you judge that tiles will be able to hold their grip. However, if not, your only real choice will be a garage floor mat.
