Including Kids At Adult Celebrations
You can make your marriage celebration and wedding reception a truly family affair by including children in the activities. You may even include kids as part of your wedding party, special helpers, or as guests.
Chaos, confusion, noise, distraction, and disruption may all describe the typical scene when little ones attend an adult event and are left to their devices. An unsupervised child is just looking for trouble.
Ok, let us presume you are going to include little ones at least as guests to your wedding. What do you do with them?
Option : Put the children in a separate room or rooms with appropriate child care supervision. This can provide the adults an invaluable service and offers you the opportunity to make the special event into a fun activity time for the kids as well.
Do not just isolate the children, plan exciting and age appropriate activities to keep them involved. The more engaged kids are; the happier they are. You want happy children. Unhappy little ones emerge when left to their own devices.
Consider a spectacular children’s event like a magic show, carnival, or guest entertainer. You can turn babysitting into a real event. The kids will always remember it. Of course, kids will get along fine with normal play time activities, but you might just make a big impact with your own spectacular children’s event.
A blended family may find it especially meaningful to include the little ones in responding to the pledges by adding an appropriate set of questions to the parents and then to the children. The little ones respond “I do”.
The children of blended families need to be included if at all possible in the special event vows that include children. The special event is launching a marriage, but it is also launching a family. Therefore it is appropriate to include the kids in the marriage celebration vows.
Your marriage celebration reception can be an exciting family event by including the children in your activities. Be sure to protect them from potentially inappropriate situations. Provide added activity supports like coloring books for smaller children, but be sure to include the children in as much of the activity as possible including the dancing. This is not only cute to watch, and could be entertaining as well, but it will bring a smile to the face of every grandma and grandpa present.
The key to including little ones is to include them. Nobody wants to be lift out, pushed aside, or ignored – not even children. Give them special duties and they will love every minute. Ask yourself, “What could the kids do to help?” The possibilities are huge if you give it some thought: errands, greeting, distribution, decorating
If children arrive at your special event unexpectedly, just relax. Remember family does include children. In most cases, if a guest brings their children, they expect to take responsibility for them. It might be a good idea to ask one of your ushers to be alert and offer assistance if needed, but look to the parent to care for their children and just enjoy having your family and friends together.
