Locksmith Part Of An Ancient Art And Practice

The master craft of the locksmith is an invaluable service. It was important in the past and is ever more important in the present. Traditionally lock smithing was the art and science of making and ‘defeating’ locks. Today’s lock smithing practice does a great deal more.

Locks have been found in Egypt that dated back four thousand years. Oddly enough they used the same pin tumbler lock system that the locks of today use. Though no one culture can claim to have started the art of the locksmith , it must be said that they have been a part of our professional industry for a long time.

A locksmith will often work out of a store front, even as part of a franchise or chain of businesses. They will often have a vehicle that they use to travel to job sites or places of emergency, as the locksmith is almost invaluable in some police-handled situations. They can be part of the staff at an institution, providing personal lock smithing services. They might also specialize in only one area or field of lock smithing, such as automotive, residential or business.

People in this business are often called to make custom locks for certain situations. They might be asked to create a unique vault for a bank or business with important valuables. Where ever there are locks, there are lock pickers. When a lock picker or thief breaks through a lock by discovering it’s combination or how it opens, that is called defeating the lock. With a custom built vault or safe, there is little chance there will be a copy of the vault obtained for thieves to defeat in practice for defeating the real thing.

Another task that is often set before someone well versed in lock smithing is that of determining the risk of a situation. They excel in risk assessment, whether it is important documents, jewels or money, anything that someone else might covet and want to take for themselves. While not every locksmith is going to have knowledge of security systems, all good security specialists have lock smithing knowledge or experience. Locksmiths look at a situation and figure out how many layers of protection are required. A difficult multi-layered lock system will not deter thieves forever; however, it will deter thieves under time constraints to look for weaker targets.

Full disclosure is the practice of making sure the public is kept abreast of information, technology or other important industry achievements. This can be in the realm of computers, science or especially in politics. In the eighteen hundreds, full disclosure came under heavy scrutiny, thanks to the field of the locksmith. People wondered if explaining to the public about how certain difficult locks and safes worked, they were in truth making thieves out of innocent people. In turn, others said that true thieves will always know more than the general public could learn from full disclosure. Now of course, the public strives to learn everything it can, as much as it can, about everything.

Although the lock smithing craft is very old, it is continually adding new technologies. A locksmith has to constantly learn new methods and new security measures. Sometimes in modern security and lock smithing practices, computers and other engineering types of technology are added, to help prevent crime and theft. The locksmith is there for us, to keep the thieves at bay.
