You Need an Overall Health Plan Instead of a Diet

Lacking the proper information, it’s easy to mistakenly believe that exercising on an empty stomach, skipping meals or eating only from one food group for example could be useful. What are the most common mistakes found in the typical person’s dieting plans?

Many factors affect your body’s calorie burn rate. We often tend towards an oversimplified approach and focus on just one factor. However, our age and sex, the way we sleep, our body makeup in terms of muscle mass, genetic factors and our general level of fitness and health are but a few of the many variables in play.

Don’t focus exercise on the fat areas alone. While any exercise is good in many ways, there is no scientific data that indicates that exercise targeted to a specific area will burn fat in that particular area. A million sit-ups won’t dissolve stomach fat. Targeted muscle tone – yes, but targeted fat burn – no.

Don’t overdo the low calorie count. When you severely restrict your caloric intake you are encouraged by the quick weight loss. However, it’s temporary. The body reacts to having less by slowing down its burn rate. Further, it’s dangerous not to supply the body with the minimum amount of nutrients it needs. You may lose some weight but at the expense of muscles, bones and organs, potentially with long term and negative effects.

Probably the most misunderstood and misused practice in the weight loss area is the use of diet pills. Again, the quick loss of weight by the severe reduction in intake is merely temporary. It will almost certainly come back when the pills are discontinued.

A good weight loss program is part of a good overall health plan. You cannot succeed by simply dieting.
